Following my troubled adolescence with drugs and stimulated by my need to be seen, I have been taking photographic self-portraits since 1988. I was unconsciously beginning my autobiographical project “Someone to Love”, but it was also a form of self-therapy, to express emotions I felt I couldn’t show, to discover the plasticity of my identity and to raise my self-esteem, especially in moments of crisis. Since 2012 I am also working on the video self-portrait on my project “La Vie en Rose” which documents my present life and emotions, with the (real) goal of finding my ideal partner. In 2005 I realized that my practice could be useful for others too, and I was very interested in seeing others express their emotions, so I built a method called The Self-portrait Experience®, to explore and document one’s own life using photography and video, with guidelines for an intuitive perception and choice of the works. During my workshops participants take a series of pictures alone in my studio, so the collaborative works are produced in my absence. The best of these images can be part of my project HIGHER SELF (see works). In the self-portrait we are author, subject and spectator. The dynamics of “gazes” among the three roles stimulates our Higher Self, which expresses itself through the language of art and iconography. The triple role of the self-portraitist intensifies the relationship between the artist and the spectator. It’s as if the artist was saying “This concerns you personally and deeply”. The self-portrait is the only possible image of the creator of that image, in the precise moment of the creation of the image. It is the portrait of our Creative Self, of our Higher Self. We all possess a Higher Self, even those who, because of their ostracism, seem to have forgotten it. I have been holding workshops regularly since 2005 in Italy, Spain, Finland, France, Luxemburg, Canada, UK, Korea, Bangladesh and the USA, in universities, museums, galleries, prisons, mental health centers, schools and companies. I'm determined to divulge my method as much as possible, in order that more and more people acquire this powerful tool to transform their pain into artworks. I believe in art as social activism and I'm interested in subverting the idea that art should exist for its own sake. For Tina Prize, during an exhibition I can hold an artist talk and a self-portrait workshop for the public, on the expression of emotions. I can also hold workshops in prison, mental health institutions or for teenagers. I submit here images and videos of the following projects: HIGHER SELF, a series of collaborative self-portraits of my workshop participants (the photographs you see in my profile, black background) SOMEONE TO LOVE, the autobiographic diaporama https://vimeo.com/47436146 Some images of the series SOMEONE TO LOVE, my autobiography in images, exhibited in the Mois de la Photo in Montreal 2011 and other festivals and galleries. LA VIE EN ROSE, the 2013 trilogy https://vimeo.com/102751357 LA VIE EN ROSE, more videos produced in 2015: Bancomatitis: https://vimeo.com/133505308 UNCOOL, a video produced with addicts in recovery. Depending on the size of the gallery, I can exhibit one or more of these projects. My latest is LA VIE EN ROSE, of which I am regularly producing new videos, and which will be launched online very soon. For Los Angeles galleries: in February 2016 I will be in San Francisco for a self-portrait workshop at Los Gatos Museum, so it would be great to have an exhibit in L.A. then. I also have the possibility to get a grant from the Catalan government for an exhibit, but this has to be applied for as soon as possible. Thanks!
