Kathryn Hart’s art reflects the human condition — all of its crags, crevices, revelations and secrets — and her belief in an endless ability to rise from the ashes. Her mixed media works seep with raw, personal history and exude a sense of loss, longing and an ultimate conviction in renewal. Hart’s current work, “Unapologetic Presence,” searches for the unswayable identity and its philosophical essence amid the influences of culture, heritage and personal experience. NYC art critics have described Hart’s artworks as, “mired in matter, their power emanating from their very physical palpability and her unique way of imbuing the actual with its own transcendent mystery. Humanoid-like beings are often sculpted and sutured into a surface smeared with sensuously tactile impasto, clotted paint and found objects in a manner at once funky and oddly elegant, to reflect what we want others to see and what we hide.” Hart desanctifies the traditional plane surface with construction and deconstruction so that the work becomes an entity, embryonic and glistening, oddly elegant with vulnerability and an unapologetic presence. Rips, tears and holes in the support incorporate the surrounding environment into the very composition. Uncensored materials are exploited to their full extent, even in the natural state for Hart believes in the inherent truth and power of the raw materials. An avid equestrian from a young age, earthy materials such as burlap, hemp and jute spawn poignant memories of time spent in the barn surrounded by horses and their unadulterated honesty. As a plastic surgeon's daughter, suturing together and ripping apart come naturally from her frequent observations of her father in the operating theater. However, Hart’s aim is not to veil the underbelly, but to reveal it. Hart lives in Colorado.
